Merit Health Woman's Hospital Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Pink Party Kickoff Event
10/3/2024
Merit Health Woman’s Hospital proudly kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an exciting and educational Pink Party event for employees on October 2. This special celebration featured breast cancer education and awareness activities and included the iconic Big Pink Chair from the American Cancer Society, offering a fun and interactive photo opportunity for the physicians and staff.
For over 40 years, Woman's Hospital has been dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the community, with a special focus on women's health. The medical staff and caregivers work hand-in-hand to deliver compassionate, personalized care, supported by the latest advancements in medical technology. The hospital’s commitment to serving women with dignity, compassion, and the highest quality of care has been unwavering throughout the years.
A key figure in the hospital’s fight against breast cancer is Dr. Phillip Ley, a dedicated surgical oncologist at Merit Health. Dr. Ley has devoted his career to improving the lives of breast cancer patients and is a tireless advocate for advancing treatment options. He is nationally recognized for his contributions, particularly his efforts in introducing intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) to Mississippi. After more than a decade of advocating for this groundbreaking treatment, Dr. Ley successfully brought IORT to the state, providing breast cancer patients with an innovative option that significantly reduces the burden of treatment. IORT delivers a single dose of targeted radiation during surgery, often replacing the need for up to 36 sessions of post-operative radiation, greatly improving patient convenience and quality of life.
Crystal Scott, hospital administrator at Merit Health Woman's Hospital, expressed her pride in the event, saying, “Our annual Pink Party is a reflection of the dedication our hospital has to breast cancer awareness and prevention. This event not only raises awareness but also reminds us of the incredible progress we’ve made in breast cancer care, from advanced technology to personalized patient care. I’m especially proud of Dr. Ley’s commitment to bringing life-changing treatments like IORT to our community.”
In addition to celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Merit Health Woman’s Hospital continues its mission to educate women about breast health, encouraging self-exams and routine screenings. Early detection is crucial, and the hospital’s Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR), ensures that patients receive top-tier 3D and digital mammography. In addition, stereotactic breast biopsies and breast ultrasounds are also available at the hospital.
